How Is Dimensional Weight Calculated?
Dimensional weight (also called volumetric weight) is a calculated value that reflects the package density.
Carriers such as DHL, UPS, and FedEx calculate dimensional weight using the following formula:
𝐿×𝑊×𝐻 / 5000
Where:
L = Length (cm)
W = Width (cm)
H = Height (cm)

After receiving the shipment, carriers measure both the actual weight and the dimensional weight. Packages may be measured manually or processed through automated laser scanning systems that capture the outermost dimensions of the parcel.
The dimensional weight is then compared to the actual shipment weight to determine which value is greater. The higher value is used to calculate the shipping cost.
